. many of them on another major issue facing washington. negotiations on the fiscal cliff. with house speaker john boehner holding his own 52nd presser on that today. and we'll have more on that throughout the hour. but first in the renewed debate on gun control. the president today named vice president joe biden to lead an inter-agency task force to develop a policy response to the tragedy at sandy hook saying he cannot do it alone. >> ultimately if this effort is to succeed, it's going to require the help of the american people. it's going to require all of you. mothers and fathers, daughters and sons, pastors, law enforcement, mental health professionals, and yes gun owners standing up and saying enough on behalf of our kids. >> the president reiterated that he'll use whatever powers his office holds to prevent another tragedy like newtown. and his choice of vice president biden signals a robust effort to confront america's foremost gun lobbyists. >> the nra is an organization that has members who are mothers and fathers. and i would expect that they've been impacted by this as wel
of spending cuts. julian talks about there's $1.6 trillion. only in washington, d.c. can you say we're winding down the war but we're going to count that as savings. baseline spending doesn't make any sense. the president of the united states -- >> if we -- >> julian, hang on one second. the president of the united states should call the congressional leadership up to camp david, go up there and they should get in a room and they should sit there until they hammer out a deal. >> i agree with that. >> julian, go ahead. >> there are three big points the viewers need to understand and they need to take note that ron did not respond to. first, on the economists. the economists are almost entirely in obama's camp in this question. cbo did a study and republicans didn't like that study so they asked crs to do a study. they found no impact. economists are with obama on this issue. obama campaigned on tax fairness, won on tax fairness. the public is with him. the third point ron didn't respond to, it is a matter of fact republicans have paraded for the last -- since anybody can remember as the party t
. >> brings more obstruction from speaker boehner. >> the white house has wasted another week. washington has a spending problem, not a revenue problem. >> and a dodge on jobs. >> why take such a risk when the jobs number is improving? >> well, because the risk the president wants us to take, increasing tax rates, will hit many small businesses. >> this is a moment of truth. the clock is ticking. christmas is coming. the goose is getting fat. >> plus, go on. >> south carolina senator jim demint is dequitting. >> run stephen, run. >> you want somebody young, conservative, from south carolina. maybe who has super pac pointing -- wait a second. ♪ >> thank goodness it's friday and it's a busy one at that. we have breaking news. within the last hour, the supreme court has announced that it will for the first time take up appeals on same-sex marriage. hearing cases on the defense of marriage act and california's proposition 8. much more on that in a moment, and the busy week ends with some good news for america's workers and the president. a little christmas cheer some early. the u.s. economy gen
of standoffs and we look at the way washington works that we in the press and many in the political class fall into the habit of talking about what a small minority does as if it's the majority. i don't mean to go on too long -- >> but you are so pause a minute, ari. >> i think it's an important -- >> of course it is. >> it's not a question of 51 votes. it never has been in the united states senate long before all of these filibuster issues and things. if you lose a certain set -- number of senators, not 51, but if you're starting to wobble with people like susan collins, who is a moderate republican, and your support is cratering even among a relatively small group of senators, your nomination becomes politically untenable. and what susan rice's spokesman just told me was she started to think this was a distraction, a political distraction, and presidents have to worry about that. she obviously has a high regard for her friend, the president, and she didn't want to be a distraction to him. so, you know, it's unfortunate that this happened, but we shouldn't assume that it's the product of tota
within the republican party. they don't understand any of this. they didn't come to washington to do anything for the american people. they came on an ideological binge and they are staying on that. they are not going to come off of it. so i think that speaker boehner is going to have to cobble up 130 republican votes knowing full well about 45 or 50 of them he's never going to get, and we on the other side of the aisle are perfectly willing to come up with 125 or 130 votes on this issue and let's just meet halfway and get this done. that would give you 260 votes. you don't need but 218 for it to pass. but if you think you're going to do something and get your 218 just from the republicans, then that's not the way to do it. and i think that that's what the problem is here. speaker boehner is being threatened with that 218 votes from the republicans or he is subject to lose 125, 130 of them when he's trying to get re-elected to his speakership. >> do you think he can fight that rebellion off, sir? because there are a number of people who are saying that they would rather replace him a
much. >> just like those two in washington, they are talking but they're also posturing and posing instead of negotiating. it's gamesmanship. it's not cooperative governing but competitive dealmaking where each is merely trying to crush the other as daniel day-lewis' ruthless oil man did in "there will be blood." >> my sword reaches across the room and starts to drink your milkshake. i drink your milkshake. i drink it up! >> who will drink the other's milkshake? will they learn how to talk to each other? will they drive off the cliff? oh, there's a cheap hollywood feel to this bhol narrative, this self-inflicted drama, and i hope no one ever, ever makes a movie about it. that does it for "the cycle." jonathan capehart is in the chair today? i feel like he's cheating on us. weren't you part of "the cycle", brother? >> i was, but it's a new day now. thanks guys. i'm jonathan capehart in for martin bashir on this december 31st, 2012. we're so very close to a deal that would stop all hell from breaking loose. oh, and happy new year. >> today it appears that an agreement to prevent this
